How To Apply- External

Direct the development of track technology within the context of the railway system to improve the efficient delivery of corporate outputs and to deliver the future railway.

Key Accountabilities

• Set the company technical strategy for the development and use of new and existing track engineering assets and systems.

• Manage improvements in processes, products, systems, team development and organisation design to optimise efficiency in the delivery of corporate goals.

• Direct the management of technology projects to agreed cost, time and quality to meet the needs of the wider business, including associated life cycle support products, processes and competences.

• Manage the development of innovative technology projects and competence to support the future railway.

• Manage the financial assessment of the business benefits of development projects and confirm with the Sponsor, end user and Finance. Prioritise work and progress financial authorities where required.

• Set strategy for engagement with external parties on asset interface issues. Establish close collaboration with academic institutions, the supply industry and others to influence, identify and exploit advances in technology.

• Provide professional expertise on track assets and systems to the rest of the organisation.

• Provide technical input to interactions with industry bodies to further Network Rail’s interests and influence the development of British, European and rail industry standards and legislation.

• Provide specialist input to the development and management of track engineering policy, standards and other technical products.

• Identify the need for and manage complex technical investigations into track engineering issues. Support formal investigations and the progression of resulting recommendations with expert technical input.

• Act as a member of the New Product Group, and prepare products and systems for an efficient passage through the acceptance processes.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Chartered Engineer
• Experience of setting a technology strategy
• Broad and extensive experience in the development of track engineering technology
• Significant senior management and team development experience
• A sound knowledge of policies and standards relating to track
• A sound understanding of the principles of project management
• Strong commercial awareness and financially astute
• Holds relevant professional licences or capable of achieving within two years
• Knowledge of the engineering safety management process

Desirable

• Fellow of a relevant institution
• Relevant management qualification
