Job Description

Tasks

maintenance on turnouts and other infrastructure components; inspects switches and road crossings. Loads and unloads materials (ballasts and ties) which may require use of respirator and other protective equipment; clears brush and debris from right-of-way. Manually handles materials such as ties, switch timber, switch materials, tie plates, spikes, and rail anchors. Works within the guidelines of the System Safety Program by being alert to physical hazards which affect operations, including the modification of recognition of or cessation of operations when conditions exist or could develop that would conflict with a safe operating environment for Amtrak or others. Performs watchman duties in as much as such duties are assigned to this position. Performs duties in enclosed areas such as tunnels, station tracks above ground level or on such structures as open deck bridges. Performs additional duties as assigned. Measures and cuts rail for buffers, drills holes, and builds panels (section of small track built out of main track). Inspects and maintains small tools and equipment conducting daily inventories to insure good working order. With proper training & qualification, operates various small, gas-powered tools such as Geismar drill, Racine Rail Saw, Gas nutter, and oxygen acetylene torch.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Must have some work experience in a heavy construction industrial setting. Possession of valid California Driver License in the State of California. Must be physically capable of performing manual labor (lifting at least 50 pounds) using track tools such as a claw bar, lining bar, spiking maul, sledge hammer, track jack, brush cutting tools, shovels, ballast forks, etc. Work hours will include day & night time hours as assigned. Work environment is that of an operating commuter railroad.
Requirements
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to work well with others as a team player.
